Game Drive

Explore Tanzania’s wildlife on thrilling, immersive safari drives.

A game drive is the centrepiece of any Tanzanian safari. It is the experience travelers imagine when they think of Africa: driving across golden plains, spotting animals in the wild, and pausing to watch herds, predators, or birds in their natural behavior.

Unlike guided walks or cultural tours, a game drive is focused solely on wildlife viewing. Guests set off in specialized safari vehicles, accompanied by experienced guides who know the landscapes, track animal movements, and share insights about behavior and ecosystems. From the Serengeti’s vast savannahs to the Ngorongoro Crater’s unique ecosystem, each game drive offers a new adventure.

What Is a Game Drive?

A game drive is a guided wildlife excursion by vehicle into a national park or reserve. The term is often listed in safari itineraries and refers to the dedicated time you spend inside the park observing animals.

Features of a game drive include:

  • Conducted in specially designed safari jeeps with open or pop-up roofs.
  • Guided by trained naturalists who interpret animal behavior and tracking.
  • Flexible in timing, usually offered as morning, afternoon, or full-day excursions.
  • Available in almost all Tanzanian parks, from the Serengeti to Tarangire.

Game drives are not just about spotting the Big Five—they are about seeing entire ecosystems at work, from herds of wildebeest moving across plains to predators stalking silently.

Game Drive Durations and Timings

Game drives in Tanzania are structured around wildlife activity patterns. Animals are most active during cooler hours of the day, making mornings and late afternoons ideal. Longer drives cover more ground and increase the chances of extraordinary encounters.

  • Morning Drives (6:30 am – 9:00 am):
The crisp morning air and golden light create perfect conditions. Predators are often returning from night hunts, and grazers like zebra and wildebeest are active. Photographers particularly love this time.
  • Afternoon Drives (3:30 pm – 6:30 pm):
These drives capture animals as they emerge to graze before dusk. Elephants and buffalo are often seen heading toward water sources, while big cats prepare for evening hunts.
  • Full-Day Drives (10:00 am – 4:00 pm):
Best suited for vast parks like the Serengeti, full-day drives allow travelers to cover vast distances. A picnic lunch is usually enjoyed at designated sites inside the park.
  • Night Drives (7:00 pm – 9:00 pm):
Not permitted in Serengeti, but possible in conservancies and private reserves. Spotlights are used to reveal nocturnal animals such as porcupines, civets, hyenas, and occasionally lions or leopards on the prowl.

Traveler’s Tip: Combining morning and afternoon drives gives a balanced safari experience, while adding one full-day drive provides deeper exploration.

Types of Safari Vehicles

The safari vehicle is central to the game drive experience, offering both safety and comfort. In Tanzania, operators and camps use several types of vehicles tailored for terrain and style.

4×4 Toyota Land Cruiser Jeeps

  • The most reliable and widely used safari vehicle in Tanzania.
  • Seats 6 comfortably but can hold up to 8 with an additional seat.
  • Equipped with pop-up or open roofs for 360-degree viewing.
  • Performs well on rough terrain and all-weather conditions.
  • Available in standard and stretched versions (larger capacity).

Tour Vans / Minibuses

  • More budget-friendly, used mainly for road safaris.
  • Some models include 4WD with pop-up roofs.
  • Suitable for smoother roads but less ideal for muddy or rugged terrain.

Open-Sided Safari Vehicles

  • Used mainly in fly-in lodges and camps within parks.
  • Excellent for unobstructed photography and close encounters.
  • Restricted to in-park use, as they are not suited for highways.

Private vs. Shared Game Drives

When booking a safari, travelers often choose between private or shared drives. Both options have distinct advantages:

  • Shared Game Drives: Affordable, social, and still offer excellent wildlife encounters. Great for solo travelers or couples.
  • Private Game Drives: Provide flexibility in timing, routes, and focus. Perfect for families, photographers, or those who want a more personal experience.

Recommendation: If your safari focus is on wildlife photography or birding, opt for private vehicles to maximize your opportunities.

Night Game Drives – A Rare Treat

Although unavailable in Serengeti National Park, night drives are possible in areas like Lake Manyara or certain private conservancies. These offer a completely different perspective of the bush. Spotlights reveal smaller, elusive species not seen during the day. You may spot:

  • Nocturnal mammals like bushbabies, civets, and genets.
  • Lions or leopards actively hunting.
  • Birds such as owls and nightjars.

Night drives add a sense of mystery and adventure, showing a side of Tanzania, most travellers never see.
