The trip at a glance

The Mara and the Serengeti are one place with a border through it

Most people who ask about Kenya and Tanzania together want the same thing: the big cats of the Masai Mara and the wide plains of the Serengeti, without choosing between them. It works well, as long as the border is planned rather than hoped for.

We run Kenya first and Tanzania second. Kenya starts the trip gently, and Tanzania gives it the longer, quieter finish: the Serengeti, the crater and Tarangire.

Prefer to compare first? Our guide to Kenya versus Tanzania sets the two side by side.

Day by day

Twelve nights, from Nairobi to Kilimanjaro

Day1

Land in Nairobi

Your Kenyan guide meets you at Jomo Kenyatta airport and drives you to Ole Sereni, a hotel on the edge of Nairobi National Park. It's a soft landing after the flight: dinner, a proper sleep and nothing else planned.

Night: Ole Sereni Hotel, Nairobi
Day2

Into the Rift Valley to Lake Nakuru

A private 4x4 and driver-guide takes you north-west into the Rift Valley to Lake Nakuru National Park, a small park of lake shore, woodland and grassland known for its rhino, buffalo and Rothschild's giraffe, and for the birds on the water. You arrive in time for a first game drive.

Night: Lake Nakuru Sopa Lodge
Day3

A full day at Lake Nakuru

A second day in the park lets you work the early and late light on the lake shore either side of a rest at the lodge. Nobody is counting kilometers today.

Night: Lake Nakuru Sopa Lodge
Day4

A lake-shore night at Naivasha

A short drive to Lake Naivasha breaks the road to the Mara. The resort's gardens run down to the water, so the afternoon is yours for birdlife and a long lunch.

Night: Lake Naivasha Sopa Resort
Day5

Across Maasai country to the Masai Mara

About five hours by road, the longest drive of the Kenya leg, which is why the day has nothing else in it. We plan around it: an early start, a proper lunch stop, and a late-afternoon arrival at the lodge with time to unpack before dinner.

Night: Masai Mara Sopa Lodge
Day6

A full day in the Mara

Dawn and late-afternoon game drives with the middle of the day at the lodge. The Mara is big-cat country: lion, cheetah and leopard, with elephant, buffalo and giraffe on the grasslands. In February the great herds are down in the southern Serengeti, so the Mara's resident game is the story today.

Day7

Over the border by air to Ndutu

Light aircraft take you from the Mara to Migori. A short road crossing takes you over the border at Isebania, and a second flight lands on the southern Serengeti plains at Ndutu. The whole link takes about half a day, and the wait at the border is the one part we can't control. Your Tanzanian guide meets you at the airstrip, and the afternoon is a first game drive on the calving grounds.

Night: Africa Safari Ngorongoro Ndutu
Day8 and 9

Two days on the calving plains

February is the heart of the calving season, when most of the year's wildebeest calves are born on the short-grass plains around Ndutu and the predators are never far away. Two full days with your guide to follow the herds, with the camp's lake shore and acacia woodland as a change of scene.

Nights: Africa Safari Ngorongoro Ndutu

Day10

Olduvai Gorge, then up to Karatu

After a morning drive, you leave Ndutu for Olduvai Gorge, where early human remains were found, and climb to the Karatu highlands. Ndutu to Karatu is about three and a half hours of rough track, longer if it has rained, so it is the only task of the day.

Night: Africa Safari Karatu
Day11

The Ngorongoro Crater at dawn, then Lake Manyara

Down the crater road at first light, before most vehicles, and out again by early afternoon. The crater is a half-day, with at most six hours on the floor, and one of the best places in Tanzania to look for black rhino. Then it's about forty minutes along the tar to Jungle Pearl on the Lake Manyara shore, for a slow afternoon.

Tarangire, with its baobabs
Day12

Tarangire, the elephant park

A full day in Tarangire National Park, a good hour and a half from the lodge, among baobabs and big elephant herds along the river. We keep it as its own day so it never gets squeezed.

Night: Jungle Pearl Resort, Lake Manyara
Day13

A last morning, then home

A slow breakfast, then the drive to Kilimanjaro airport timed to your flight. Your quote names each flight and the time we leave the lodge.

A shorter way

Ten nights with Amboseli instead of the Mara

If twelve nights is more than you want, the same two countries fit into ten with Amboseli in place of the Mara. That is three nights in Kenya (Nairobi, then two at Amboseli Sopa Lodge with Kilimanjaro behind the elephants), a handover from your Kenyan guide to your Tanzanian one at the Namanga border, and seven nights in northern Tanzania: the foothills of Kilimanjaro, Lake Manyara and Tarangire, the Ngorongoro Crater and, in the calving months, the southern Serengeti at Ndutu.

It is priced from a real quote at $6,950 per person for March, twin share, with flights extra. Lodges include Amboseli Sopa Lodge and Kaliwa Lodge on Kilimanjaro’s forested slopes.

When to go

The months decide the route

January to March

Calving on the southern plains

The route on this page. Ndutu comes first in Tanzania and the crater on the way back, and the Mara is quieter than in the second half of the year.

July to October

The Mara River season

The herds work the Mara River. The route changes: we base you in the northern Serengeti, and flying in reverse so you meet the herds fresh is often the better shape. Early July is early arrivals, and August to October is the reliable part.

November to December

Short rains, southbound herds

Greener, quieter and cheaper, with the herds returning south. April is the month we steer people away from, because roads and camps close in the long rains.

Timing follows the rains, not the calendar, so we talk in seasons and odds. More in our guides to the Great Migration and the best time to visit Kenya.

Good to know

Questions about a Kenya and Tanzania safari

How many nights do you need for Kenya and Tanzania together?+
Ten nights is the shortest trip that does both countries properly: three in Kenya, with Amboseli and Kilimanjaro in view, and seven in northern Tanzania. Twelve nights adds the Masai Mara and the Serengeti, with two or three nights in each so no stop is a one-night chain. Add a day either side for the flights.
How do you get from Kenya to Tanzania?+
There are three real ways. Light aircraft link the Mara to the Serengeti, with a short road crossing of the Isebania border in the middle, in about half a day; the link runs daily except from 1 April to 20 May. From Amboseli you drive to the Namanga border, where your Kenyan guide hands you to your Tanzanian one. Or you fly Nairobi to Kilimanjaro, which runs all year. The old gate between the Mara and the Serengeti has been closed to tourists since 1977, so no operator can drive you straight across.
Is it cheaper to do Kenya or Tanzania?+
It depends on where you stay and when. In Kenya, reserve entry is charged per person per day and costs more from July to December than from January to June, and nothing in Kenya includes park entry unless the quote says so. Ours always does. Our Kenya versus Tanzania guide compares the two, and what a Kenya safari costs sets out the numbers.
When is the best time for a Kenya and Tanzania safari?+
July to October is the Mara River season, when the herds cross between Tanzania and Kenya. It is one river with crossing points on both sides, so you can see crossings from the Tanzanian bank too. We promise the season and the odds, never a particular crossing, and early July is early arrivals rather than peak. January to March is calving season in the southern Serengeti, which is the trip on this page. April is the month we steer people away from, and May to June is green and quiet.
Can we see the Great Migration from both countries?+
Yes. The herds live on both sides of the border over the year. From July to October the northern Serengeti and the Mara are the places to be, and from January to March the calving plains around Ndutu are. Which side you see it from matters less than being in the right part of the ecosystem for the month, and that is what we plan around.
Do we need visas for both countries?+
Yes, and the rules change, so use the official sites only. Kenya asks for an eTA, from $30. Apply at etakenya.go.ke at least two weeks ahead. Since 5 October 2026 Kenya has also required its own government travel health insurance, bought through the same application. Tanzania needs a visa too, and on a US passport that's the multiple-entry visa ($100, valid a year) from visa.immigration.go.tz, so allow up to ten days. Since 1 October 2026 Tanzania has also required government inbound travel insurance ($44 per adult, bought before you arrive). Check the State Department's advice for Kenya and Tanzania at travel.state.gov before you book. This trip goes from Kenya into Tanzania, and Tanzania asks for a yellow fever certificate from anyone arriving from Kenya. On yellow fever, we generally tell people the vaccine is worth having, as one shot lasts a lifetime, but your doctor always has the last say. Please speak to a travel doctor early about it and about malaria cover.
What is included in the price?+
Your private 4x4 and driver-guide in each country, every night in the lodges named, the meals each lodge rate includes, park, reserve and conservation fees, the flights inside the trip, airport and border transfers, and in-vehicle water and soft drinks. International flights, travel insurance, visas, tips and optional extras such as a balloon flight are not included. Light aircraft work to soft bags of around 15 to 20kg (33 to 44 lb) each, and we tell you the allowance for your flights.
How do we get a quote for our own dates?+
Fill in the short form on this page, email [email protected], book a call, or WhatsApp Samara on +61 492 037 622. We come back to you personally, usually the same day, ask what matters most to you, and build the trip around your dates, with every lodge named and the price fixed in US dollars.
