The Heart of Gorilla Country

Mountain gorillas · Ancient rainforests · Big Five savannah

Rwanda is gorilla country. Volcanoes National Park in the north shares the Virunga massif with Uganda and the DRC, and the roughly 600 mountain gorillas of that massif are about half of those left in the wild. A permit gives you one hour with a habituated family in the bamboo and hagenia forest, close enough to watch a silverback at rest and juveniles playing in the undergrowth. Beyond the gorillas the country rewards slower exploration: Nyungwe's ancient montane rainforest for chimpanzees and the canopy walkway, Akagera rebuilt into a genuine Big Five park, and Kigali's coffee and good food in between. Rwanda is compact and remarkably well organized, with every major park reachable on good tarmac, and it joins a Tanzania safari with one short flight.

Plan Your Visit

When to Visit Rwanda

Gorillas can be trekked all year. The dry seasons make for firmer trails and clearer views, and the green seasons bring quieter forests and lower rates.

  • Peak season, long dry
  • Short dry season
  • Green season

What's happening

January

Short dry season

The short dry season. Warm, mostly dry weather with the occasional afternoon shower, and the landscape green from recent rains.

  • Green forest, soft light for photography
  • Fewer visitors than June to September
A silverback mountain gorilla sitting in the bamboo forest of Volcanoes National Park

Peak season

June to September

Long dry season · Firmer trails · Clearer views

The long dry season brings clear skies, cool mornings at altitude and the firmest trails of the year. All the parks are accessible and at their best. It's high season, so the best lodges and permits go early. For these months we'd start planning six to twelve months ahead.

  • Gorilla trekking: excellent conditions, with the trails at their driest
  • Canopy walkway: clear views and good light over Nyungwe
  • Game drives: clear skies and comfortable temperatures in Akagera

Best for a first trek and the clearest views

Zebra on a track through green grassland in Akagera National Park

Short dry season

December to February

Warm days · Green landscapes · Fewer visitors

A shorter dry spell brings warm, mostly dry weather with the occasional afternoon shower. The landscape is green from recent rains, which suits photography. Fewer visitors than June to September makes bookings easier, and it's a favorite window for repeat visitors.

  • Gorilla trekking: a year-round option, with green forest
  • Photography: lush landscapes and soft light
  • Quieter parks: easier to book than the long dry season

Best for photography and easier bookings

Green seasons

March to May & October to November

Rainy periods · Lush forest · Lower rates

The rains bring lush forest, good birding and a quieter atmosphere. April and May are the wettest months, and some lodges may close, but rates are at their lowest. Gorilla trekking continues all year. Expect mud and wet weather gear, and heavy rain can make roads and trails difficult.

  • March to May: the long rains, wettest in April and May
  • October to November: the shorter rains, with the forest at its greenest

Best for value and a quiet forest

Tell us your dates first

We lock the lodges, then the flights. The gorilla permit comes first of all: only 96 are issued a day and the dry months sell out months ahead, so we secure yours before anything else, then place your lodges, flights and transfers together. Once your deposit is in, that's the time to take out your travel insurance.

Flights

There's no direct flight from the US to Kigali, so you connect once or twice, for example in Brussels, Amsterdam or Doha. From the East Coast it's about 18 to 21 hours with one stop, and longer from other cities. Economy returns from New York have typically run from about $1,000 to $1,500 per person when we checked in October 2026, depending on timing and how early you book. Schedules change, so we check them when we build your trip.

The time difference

Rwanda runs on UTC+2 all year, with no daylight saving. That's seven hours ahead of US East and ten ahead of US West in winter, and six and nine ahead in summer, so a quiet first night helps.

The Practical Bits

Permits, Fitness, Safety and Packing

The short version of what to sort before you fly. For visas and anything medical we point you to the official sources, starting with the State Department and the CDC.

Permits

A gorilla permit is USD 1,500 per person, per trek, set by the Rwanda Development Board. It's non-refundable and non-transferable, and only 96 are issued a day across the park, so we secure yours before anything else. Permits for June to September and December to February sell out months ahead. Our guide to what Rwanda gorilla trekking costs has the detail.

Fitness and age

The minimum age is 15, strictly, with no exceptions. Treks run from under an hour to five or six hours over steep, muddy ground at altitude. It's a real hike, not a stroll, but achievable at a normal level of fitness. Rangers assign each group of up to eight a family by fitness and availability, and porters carry your daypack and help on slippery sections. Tell us about any mobility concerns early.

Visas and health

Visa and passport rules are yours to confirm, and they change at short notice. US passport holders need a visa for Rwanda, which costs $50 for 30 days and is issued on arrival at Kigali airport or online in advance, and your passport needs to be valid for six months after you arrive, with a blank page. Start with the State Department's page for Rwanda and Rwanda's immigration service at migration.gov.rw. Yellow fever, malaria and other vaccinations are medical questions, so see a travel doctor well before you go. On yellow fever, we generally tell people the vaccine is worth having, as one shot lasts a lifetime, but your doctor always has the last say. The CDC lists malaria risk across Rwanda and recommends prescription medicine to prevent it.

Is it safe?

Read the State Department's latest advice for Rwanda and the CDC's travel health notices before you book, because they change. The advice covers the border with the DRC, and Rwanda is screening arrivals because of an Ebola outbreak in the DRC. If your flight home stops in Entebbe, Uganda, even without leaving the plane, the CDC's rules of October 22, 2026 count you as having been in Uganda: US citizens are routed through designated airports for health screening, and Green Card holders and other non-US citizens can't enter the US for 21 days. Pick flights that don't stop in Uganda, and we'll check your route. Ask us how it affects your plans.

What to pack

Layers, a waterproof jacket, sturdy waterproof boots, long sleeves and pants, and gloves for gripping vegetation on steep sections. Rwanda bans plastic bags, and they're confiscated if you arrive with them, so pack in cloth or paper. Vapes are illegal too. Our packing list has the rest.

What does it cost?

The permit is the biggest line, and a sample four-day trip starts from about $5,050 per person for two, with flights from the US extra. We price every trip to order. See what an African safari costs, our sample Rwanda itinerary, real trips and how booking works.

The Big Decision

Rwanda or Uganda for Gorillas?

The hour with the gorillas is just as good in both countries. What changes is how you get there, what the trek feels like, what the permit costs and what else you can add.

Choose Rwanda if

  • You want the easiest way in. The trailheads are two to three hours from Kigali airport.
  • Time is tight, or the gorillas are one stop on a longer trip with Tanzania.
  • You'd like the most polished lodges, and a trek on open volcano slopes that's generally more forgiving.
  • A permit of USD 1,500 per person suits your budget.

Choose Uganda if

  • The permit price matters. It's USD 800 per person (the Uganda Wildlife Authority price; we confirm the current price when we book).
  • You want a wilder, denser forest, with four Bwindi sectors plus Mgahinga and more choice on dates.
  • You'd like chimpanzees in Kibale, tree-climbing lions in Queen Elizabeth and the Nile at Murchison on the same trip.
  • One hour never feels like enough. Only Uganda offers the four-hour habituation experience (USD 1,500).

Uganda's treks are usually tougher and the journey in is longer. Read the full Rwanda vs Uganda gorilla trekking guide, see our Uganda page, or read about the gorilla habituation experience.

The Practical Questions

FAQ

The questions travelers ask us most about gorilla trekking in Rwanda, grouped by topic.

Can't see your question? Ask us directly and a real person will answer.

Permits and cost

How much is a gorilla trekking permit in Rwanda?
A Rwanda gorilla permit costs USD 1,500 per person, per trek, set by the Rwanda Development Board. It buys one hour with a habituated family, and it's non-refundable and non-transferable. Groups are limited to eight people per family per day. We secure permits when we build your quote, and our guide to what Rwanda gorilla trekking costs has the full picture.
How much does a gorilla trekking trip to Rwanda cost from the US?
The permit is the biggest single line. Our sample four-day trip, with a night in Kigali, two nights near Volcanoes National Park, one permit, private transfers and a driver-guide, starts from about $5,050 per person for two. Flights from the US are extra, and economy returns from New York have typically run from about $1,000 to $1,500 per person when we checked in October 2026, depending on timing. See what an African safari costs and real trips with the real prices.
Should I choose Rwanda or Uganda for gorillas?
It's the same hour with the same kind of gorillas, so choose on how you want to get there and what else you want to see. Rwanda is the quickest way in, with trailheads two to three hours from Kigali airport and the most polished lodges, and the permit is USD 1,500. Uganda's permit is lower (USD 800 per person, the Uganda Wildlife Authority price; we confirm the current price when we book), the forest is wilder and the trek is usually tougher, and it pairs with chimpanzees, tree-climbing lions and the Nile. Our Rwanda vs Uganda guide compares them side by side.
Can we combine Rwanda with Uganda or Tanzania?
Yes. Rwanda joins a Tanzania safari with a short flight from Kigali to Kilimanjaro, and some travelers trek in both Rwanda and Uganda, with Queen Elizabeth or Kibale in between. See our Uganda and Tanzania pages, and the Rwanda vs Uganda guide.

On the trek

What's the minimum age for gorilla trekking in Rwanda?
Fifteen years, strictly enforced, with no exceptions. We flag this on every family inquiry at the start. Our family safari guide covers ages by activity, and we'll suggest what works for younger children.
How fit do I need to be to trek gorillas in Rwanda?
You need a normal level of fitness and some comfort on steep, muddy ground. Treks run from under an hour to five or six hours through bamboo and montane forest at around 2,500 to 3,000 meters, depending on where the family moved overnight. Rangers assign each group a family by fitness and availability, so tell us about any mobility concerns early. Porters carry your daypack and help on steep sections, and we recommend taking one. If you have a health condition, check with your doctor.
Does Rwanda really ban plastic bags?
Yes. Rwanda banned single-use plastic bags in 2008, and they're confiscated if you arrive with them. Pack in cloth or paper bags, and repack any duty-free or beach gear before you land. We'll remind you in your pre-departure notes.

When to go

When is the best time to trek gorillas in Rwanda?
Gorillas can be trekked all year. The drier months, June to September and December to February, mean firmer trails and clearer views, and they're the busiest, so permits and the best lodges go early. March to May and October to November are wetter, with muddier trails, greener forest, quieter parks and lower rates.

Getting there

How do we get to Rwanda from the US?
There's no direct flight from the US to Kigali, so you connect once or twice. The connections include Brussels, Amsterdam and Doha, with Istanbul, Addis Ababa and Nairobi also possible, and it's about 18 to 21 hours from the East Coast with one stop. Economy returns from New York have typically run from about $1,000 to $1,500 per person when we checked in October 2026, depending on timing and how early you book. Schedules change, so we check them when we build your trip.
How far is Volcanoes National Park from Kigali?
The gorilla trailheads are two to three hours' drive from Kigali airport on good tarmac. Akagera is about two and a half hours by road, and Nyungwe is a longer day, four to five hours. We usually build in a night in Kigali before or after the trek.

Health, visas and safety

Is Rwanda safe for tourists?
Do US passport holders need a visa or vaccinations for Rwanda?
Yes, you need a visa. It costs $50 for 30 days and is issued on arrival at Kigali airport, or you can apply online in advance. Your passport needs to be valid for six months after you arrive, with a blank page. Checking your visa and passport requirements is your job, and the rules change at short notice. Look at the State Department's page for Rwanda and Rwanda's immigration service at migration.gov.rw, check any rules for children, and see a travel doctor about yellow fever, malaria and other vaccinations well before you go. On yellow fever, we generally tell people the vaccine is worth having, as one shot lasts a lifetime, but your doctor always has the last say.
