Africa's Primate Capital

Mountain gorillas · Forest chimps · Tree-climbing lions

Winston Churchill called Uganda "the Pearl of Africa", and the name still fits: deep forests, volcanic peaks, wide savannahs and the longest river on earth, threaded together by red-earth roads. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park holds roughly half the world's remaining mountain gorillas, and an hour with a silverback family is the headline of any trip. Kibale has one of the highest densities of chimpanzees in Africa, Queen Elizabeth adds tree-climbing lions and a boat through hippo-filled channels, and Murchison squeezes the whole White Nile through a seven-meter gap. The roads are rougher and the lodges fewer, and the experience is all the richer for it.

Plan Your Visit

When to Visit Uganda

Uganda's climate is forgiving, and gorillas and chimpanzees can be tracked all year. The seasons simply shift which experience you get: firm trails and clear skies in the dry months, a lush, quieter forest in the green ones.

  • Peak season, dry
  • Second dry season
  • Green season

What's happening

January

Second dry season

A shorter dry spell follows the year-end. Good trekking conditions, popular over the holidays, with the rain lighter and more intermittent than the long rains.

  • Cool mornings, warm afternoons, the odd light shower
  • Gorilla and chimp trekking run all year
Giraffe on dry savannah in Murchison Falls National Park

Peak season

June to September

Dry season · Best trekking conditions · Clear skies

This is when Uganda is at its driest. Forest trails are firm, visibility is at its peak and the weather is cool and comfortable. Gorilla trekking is excellent, chimpanzee activity is high and game viewing in the parks is consistent. It's high season, so the best lodges book out early: six to twelve months ahead is ideal.

  • June to August: peak dry season across all parks
  • September: still dry, with slightly fewer visitors
  • All months: year-round gorilla and chimp trekking

Best for a first trek and firm trails

Elephants feeding among the papyrus on the Kazinga Channel

Second dry season

December to February

Year-end travel · Good conditions · Lower rates

A shorter dry spell follows the year-end. Conditions are good for trekking and game viewing, though not quite as dry as June to September, and the rain is lighter and more intermittent. Many travelers book December for year-end breaks. Rates are often lower than in peak season, and the experience stays excellent.

  • December to January: good trekking conditions, popular over the holidays
  • February: reliable conditions, with fewer visitors
  • Weather: cool mornings, warm afternoons, the odd light shower

Best for year-end trips and easier bookings

A red colobus monkey in the lush canopy of Kibale Forest

Green seasons

March to May & October to November

Rainy periods · Lush landscapes · Lower rates

The rains bring lush green landscapes, dramatic skies and a quieter, more intimate experience. April and May see the heaviest rain, and some lodges may close, but rates are at their lowest. October and November bring lighter, more intermittent showers. Gorilla and chimp trekking remain possible year-round, and birding is exceptional. The going is steeper and muddier, so allow for it.

  • March to May: the long rains, wettest in April and May
  • October to November: showers with good trekking in between

Best for value, birding and a quiet forest

From the US

Getting to Uganda

There's no direct flight from the US to Entebbe, so you connect once or twice. The question we hear most is how you then get to Bwindi, and the honest answer is that it's a long way by road, so we often fly you in.

  1. Step one

    Your US city

There's no non-stop flight from the US to Uganda, so every route connects through a hub. You fly out of your own city and we build the connections around it.

Tell us your dates first

We lock the lodges, then the flights. The gorilla permit comes first of all: for the drier months permits go months ahead, so we secure yours at quote time, then place your lodges, flights and transfers together. Once your deposit is in, that's the time to take out your travel insurance.

Flights

There's no direct flight from the US to Entebbe, so you connect once or twice, for example in Nairobi, Brussels or Doha. From the East Coast it's about 18 to 21 hours with one stop, and longer from other cities. Economy returns from New York have typically run from about $1,000 to $1,500 per person when we checked in October 2026, depending on timing and how early you book. Schedules change, so we check them when we build your trip.

The time difference

Uganda runs on UTC+3 all year, with no daylight saving. That's eight hours ahead of US East and eleven ahead of US West in winter, and seven and ten ahead in summer, so a quiet first night helps.

The Practical Bits

Permits, Fitness, Safety and Packing

The short version of what to sort before you fly. For visas and anything medical we point you to the official sources, starting with the State Department and the CDC.

Permits

A gorilla permit is USD 800 per person (Uganda Wildlife Authority price; we confirm the current price when we book). It's non-refundable and non-transferable, groups are limited to eight people per family per day, and for the drier months permits go months ahead, so we secure yours first. The habituation experience, up to four hours in southern Bwindi, is USD 1,500 per person (Uganda Wildlife Authority price; we confirm the current price when we book) and is limited to four people per family. See our guide to what Uganda gorilla trekking costs.

Fitness and age

The minimum age is 15 for gorillas, strictly, and 12 for chimpanzees. Bwindi is steep, dense and often muddy, and treks run from about an hour to six hours or more at around 2,000 meters. The sectors differ: Buhoma is the most accessible, Ruhija sits high and quiet, and Nkuringo is the steepest. Porters carry your daypack and help on climbs, and we recommend one. Tell us about any mobility concerns early so we can match the sector.

Is it safe?

Read the State Department's latest advice for Uganda and the CDC's Uganda page before you book, because they change. The advice covers terrorism, crime, unrest and Ebola. Under the CDC's rules of October 22, 2026, US citizens who have been in Uganda in the 21 days before they fly home are routed through designated US airports for health screening, and Green Card holders and other non-US citizens can't enter the US until 21 days after they leave Uganda. Ask us how it affects your plans.

Visas and health

Visa rules are yours to confirm, and they change at short notice. US passport holders need a visa for Uganda: apply online before you fly (a single-entry tourist visa is $50 and the approval is valid for 90 days), then print the approval and show it at Entebbe, where the visa is issued. Your passport needs to be valid for six months after you arrive. Start with the State Department's page for Uganda and Uganda's e-visa site at visas.immigration.go.ug. Yellow fever, malaria and other vaccinations are medical questions, so see a travel doctor well before you go. The CDC lists malaria risk across Uganda and recommends the yellow fever vaccine from nine months of age. On yellow fever, we generally tell people the vaccine is worth having, as one shot lasts a lifetime, but your doctor always has the last say.

What to pack

Layers, a waterproof jacket and pants, sturdy waterproof boots with ankle support, long sleeves, gloves, insect repellent and binoculars. You'll probably need cash in Uganda, though larger hotels in tourist areas may take cards. Our packing list has the rest.

What does it cost?

A four to five night Bwindi trip with one permit came to about $4,600 to $5,150 per person in our 2027 quotes for two, flying in and out of Kigali, with flights from the US extra. We price every trip to order. See what an African safari costs, real trips and how booking works.

Next door

Kenya

The Masai Mara and Amboseli are a short hop away through Nairobi, and a focused gorilla trip works well as the add-on to a Kenya safari.

The Big Decision

Uganda or Rwanda for Gorillas?

The hour with the gorillas is just as good in both countries. What changes is how you get there, what the trek feels like, what the permit costs and what else you can add.

Choose Uganda if

  • The permit price matters. It's USD 800 per person (the Uganda Wildlife Authority price; we confirm the current price when we book).
  • You want a wilder, denser forest, with four Bwindi sectors plus Mgahinga and more choice on dates.
  • You'd like chimpanzees, tree-climbing lions and the Nile on the same trip, without leaving the country.
  • One hour never feels like enough. Only Uganda offers the four-hour habituation experience (USD 1,500).

Choose Rwanda if

  • You want the easiest way in. The trailheads are two to three hours from Kigali airport.
  • Time is tight, or the gorillas are one stop on a longer trip with Tanzania.
  • You'd like the most polished lodges, and a trek on open volcano slopes that's generally more forgiving.
  • A permit of USD 1,500 per person suits your budget.

Uganda's treks are usually tougher and the journey in is longer. Read the full Rwanda vs Uganda guide, or see our Rwanda page.

The Practical Questions

FAQ

The questions travelers ask us most about gorilla trekking in Uganda, grouped by topic.

Can't see your question? Ask us directly and a real person will answer.

Permits and cost

How much is a gorilla permit in Uganda?
USD 800 per person (Uganda Wildlife Authority price; we confirm the current price when we book). It buys one hour with a habituated family, and it's non-refundable, non-transferable and limited to eight people per gorilla family per day. We secure permits at quote time, never speculatively. Our guide to what Uganda gorilla trekking costs compares it with Rwanda.
What is the gorilla habituation experience, and what does it cost?
It's up to four hours with a semi-habituated family in southern Bwindi, in the Rushaga sector, walking in alongside the trackers and researchers, instead of the standard one hour. It's Uganda only. The permit is USD 1,500 per person (Uganda Wildlife Authority price; we confirm the current price when we book), numbers are very limited and permits go early. Our habituation guide explains who it suits.
How much does a gorilla trekking trip to Uganda cost from the US?
A four to five night Bwindi trip with one permit, a porter, comfortable lodges, private transfers and a driver-guide came to about $4,600 to $5,150 per person in our 2027 quotes for two, flying in and out of Kigali. International flights from the US are extra, and economy returns from New York have typically run from about $1,000 to $1,500 per person to Entebbe or Kigali when we checked in October 2026. See what an African safari costs and real trips with the real prices.
How many days do we need for a Uganda safari?
A focused gorilla trip takes four to five nights. Five to six days covers gorillas in Bwindi and chimpanzees in Kibale, and seven to ten days covers the highlights loop with Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls. With twelve days or more you can add the habituation experiences. Our complete Uganda safari guide shows how the pieces fit together.
Should I choose Uganda or Rwanda for gorillas?
Uganda is wilder and the permit is lower, and it lets you add chimpanzees, tree-climbing lions and the Nile in one country, as well as the four-hour habituation experience. Rwanda is quicker and easier to reach, with trailheads two to three hours from Kigali airport, more polished lodges and a USD 1,500 permit. It's the same hour either way. Our Rwanda vs Uganda guide compares them in full.

On the trek

What's the minimum age for gorilla and chimpanzee trekking?
Fifteen for gorillas, strictly enforced by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, with no exceptions even for fit teenagers a month short. Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale starts at 12. We flag this on every family inquiry at the start.
How fit do I need to be to trek gorillas in Uganda?
You need a normal level of fitness and some comfort on steep, muddy ground. Treks run from about an hour to six hours or more through thick forest at around 2,000 meters, depending on the sector and where the family has moved. Porters carry your daypack and give you a hand on steep sections, and we recommend taking one. The Uganda Wildlife Authority can assign a more accessible family if you flag mobility concerns at the briefing, so tell us early. If you have a health condition, check with your doctor.
What is there to see in Uganda besides gorillas?
Chimpanzees in Kibale Forest, with sighting success around 90 percent on the standard trek, tree-climbing lions and a Kazinga Channel boat cruise in Queen Elizabeth National Park, and the Nile pouring through a seven-meter gap at Murchison Falls. On the road north you can track white rhino on foot at Ziwa. See our guides to Kibale, Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls.

When to go

When is the best time to trek gorillas in Uganda?
Gorillas and chimpanzees can be trekked all year. The drier months, June to September and December to February, mean firmer trails and easier walking, and they're the busiest. March to May and October to November are wetter, with steeper, muddier going, but the forest is lush, the rates are lower and birding is at its best.

Getting there

How do we get to Uganda from the US, and how do we reach Bwindi?
There's no direct flight from the US to Entebbe, so you connect once or twice, for example in Nairobi, Brussels or Doha. Economy returns from New York have typically run from about $1,000 to $1,500 per person when we checked in October 2026. Bwindi is a long way from Entebbe, commonly six to nine hours by road, so we often use a light flight to the Kihihi or Kisoro airstrip, and some of our Bwindi trips fly in and out of Kigali instead.

Health, visas and safety

Is Uganda safe for tourists?
Read the State Department's latest advice for Uganda and the CDC's Uganda page before you book, because they change. The advice covers terrorism, crime, unrest and Ebola. Under the CDC's rules of October 22, 2026, US citizens who have been in Uganda in the 21 days before they fly home are routed through designated US airports for health screening, and Green Card holders and other non-US citizens can't enter the US until 21 days after they leave Uganda. Ask us how it affects your plans.
Do US passport holders need a visa or vaccinations for Uganda?
Yes, you need a visa. Apply online before you fly (a single-entry tourist visa is $50 and the approval is valid for 90 days), then print the approval and show it at Entebbe, where the visa is issued. Your passport needs to be valid for six months after you arrive. Checking your visa and passport requirements is your job, and the rules change at short notice. Look at the State Department's page for Uganda and Uganda's e-visa site at visas.immigration.go.ug, check any rules for children, and see a travel doctor about yellow fever, malaria and other vaccinations well before you go. On yellow fever, we generally tell people the vaccine is worth having, as one shot lasts a lifetime, but your doctor always has the last say.
