Do US Citizens Need a Visa for South Africa? No, But Read This First

No visa for up to 90 days, but a passport rule that catches people at the gate, a new online traveler declaration, an ETA you don't need, and relaxed rules for kids. What to actually carry.

No. US passport holders don't need a visa for South Africa for a vacation of up to 90 days. You get a stamp on arrival and that's the visa. But three things around the border have changed in the last two years, one of them, the online traveler declaration, catches people at the gate, and the oldest rule of all, blank passport pages, still catches people at the counter. Here's what you actually need.

The short version. US citizens are visa-free in South Africa for up to 90 days of tourism. You need a passport with at least two blank visa pages and validity of 30 days past your trip, and you complete the SARS online traveler declaration in the 24 hours before you fly in. The new electronic travel authorization is for other nationalities, not Americans.

The new ETA, for US passports
  • Passport validity. South Africa's own rule is 30 days beyond the day you leave. Six months is the habit worth keeping, and it's what Kenya and Tanzania need if they're on the same trip.
  • Two blank pages, meaning full visa pages, not the endorsement pages at the back, for the entry and exit stamps. Immigration enforces this and can refuse entry without them. Add two more for every other African country on the trip. If your passport is nearly full, renew it before you book flights.
  • A return or onward ticket. Rarely asked for, occasionally required.
  • The online traveler declaration, below.

Leaving and re-entering doesn't reset the 90 days. If you're thinking of a longer stay, or of working, that's a visa through the South African Embassy in Washington or one of the consulates, and well outside what this page covers.

The online traveler declaration

Everyone entering or leaving South Africa, citizens included, now completes the South African Revenue Service's online traveler declaration. It has been compulsory since July 1, 2026 and replaces the paper customs card. You submit it no more than 24 hours before you depart on the final leg of your journey to South Africa, and again before you leave the country. It lives on the SARS traveler declaration page and in the SARS MobiApp, takes about five minutes, and asks the usual customs questions about currency over the limits and goods to declare. Children need one too; a parent fills it in for them. SARS says you won't be refused entry just for not having done it, but you'll be sent to a self-service terminal at the airport, which is where the line is. We put the link in your pre-departure email with the right date on it.

The new electronic travel authorization

South Africa launched an electronic travel authorization, an ETA, in 2026. It costs ZAR 500, it's applied for at eta.dha.gov.za, and it exists for nationalities that previously needed a visa, starting with China, India, Indonesia and Mexico, arriving through Johannesburg, Cape Town, Lanseria and Durban's King Shaka airports. Americans don't need it. The portal does now say visa-exempt travelers can apply for one to get through the border faster. It's optional on a US passport, we don't ask our guests to pay for it, and if it ever becomes a requirement we'll tell you. Ignore any site offering to sell you one, and read the State Department's latest advice for South Africa before you book, because it changes.

Traveling with children

South Africa's famous birth certificate rule has been relaxed. Children traveling on a valid passport with one or both parents no longer need to produce an unabridged birth certificate or a consent letter. The documents are still required for unaccompanied minors, for children traveling with someone who isn't a parent, and for legal guardians. If that's your situation, say so when you book and we'll list exactly what to carry.

Yellow fever

South Africa asks for a yellow fever certificate if you're arriving from, or have spent more than twelve hours in transit through, a country with yellow fever transmission. Kenya and Uganda are on that list; Tanzania isn't. So a Kenya safari that finishes in Cape Town means carrying the card. Arriving from the US on the nonstops into Johannesburg, or through Europe or the Gulf, it doesn't come up, and the CDC's South Africa page says the vaccine isn't required for direct travel from the US. A long layover in Addis Ababa or Nairobi can trigger it, so check your routing. Whether you should have the vaccine is for a travel doctor with your full itinerary, not us.

Victoria Falls, Botswana and the neighbors

Crossing out of South Africa brings other countries' rules into play. Victoria Falls sits on the Zimbabwe and Zambia border: Zimbabwe sells its visa at the border, Zambia and Botswana have their own rules for a US passport, and the KAZA UniVisa covers both sides of the Falls where you're eligible. Our Victoria Falls guide covers which side to stay on, and we confirm the current rules for your passport before you travel. Each crossing takes a page, so count the blank ones before you leave.

Quick answers

Do US citizens need a visa for South Africa?

No. US passport holders can visit South Africa for tourism for up to 90 days without a visa. You're stamped in on arrival.

How long can an American stay in South Africa without a visa?

Up to 90 days. Leaving and re-entering doesn't automatically give you another 90, and anything longer is a visa through the South African Embassy or a consulate.

Do US citizens need the new South Africa ETA?

No. The electronic travel authorization launched in 2026 is for nationalities that previously needed a visa. Americans remain visa-free and don't apply for it.

What is the South Africa online traveler declaration?

The South African Revenue Service's online customs declaration, compulsory since July 1, 2026, completed no more than 24 hours before you fly into South Africa and again before you leave. It replaces the paper customs card and applies to everyone, children included.

Do children need a birth certificate to enter South Africa?

Not when traveling on a valid passport with one or both parents. Unaccompanied minors and children traveling with someone who isn't their parent still need the supporting documents.

How many blank pages does South Africa require?

At least two full visa pages. Add two more for every other African country on the same trip, because each border takes a page.
