The trip at a glance

Three very different places, and the easiest flights in Africa

South Africa works best for us as one stop on a circuit. Cape Town, Kruger and Victoria Falls each give you something the others cannot, and they link with short flights and no overland slogs. Qantas gets you to Johannesburg without a connection, which makes it the gentlest way into Africa from Australia.

Day by day

Fourteen nights, from Johannesburg to Cape Town

Day1 and 2

Land in Johannesburg and slow down

Qantas flies nonstop from Sydney and Perth, so you arrive without a connection. African Rock is a twelve-suite boutique hotel in a tropical garden ten minutes from the airport, and your transfers are handled. Two nights give you a full day to recover, with a spa if you want one, before the trip starts moving.

Nights: African Rock Hotel & Spa, near Johannesburg
Day3

Fly to Victoria Falls

A flight from Johannesburg to Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwe side, a transfer to Bayete Guest Lodge and, in the afternoon, a guided tour of the Falls with a sundowner. You are in a small town and a short walk from most things.

Night: Bayete Guest Lodge, Victoria Falls
Day4 to 6

Three days at the Falls

One day is a guided Chobe day trip, over the border into Botswana for a river cruise and a game drive with lunch. The other two are yours: a Zambezi cruise, a helicopter flight, a walk across the bridge or the pool. The river is low from September, so more of the cliff shows and less of the spray.

Nights: Bayete Guest Lodge, Victoria Falls

Day7

Fly to the Kruger area, then a private reserve

A flight from Victoria Falls to Kruger Mpumalanga airport near Nelspruit, then about two hours by road to Umkumbe Safari Lodge on the Sand River in the Sabi Sand. The Sabi Sand is a private reserve with an unfenced boundary with Kruger National Park, so the same animals roam through, but your ranger and tracker can leave the road. Your first game drive is this afternoon.

Night: Umkumbe Safari Lodge Riverside, Sabi Sand
Day8 and 9

Two days of game drives

The rate covers all meals and two game drives a day, at dawn and late afternoon, with an optional bush walk after breakfast. Drives run after dark here, and few vehicles share a sighting. The Big Five all live in this part of South Africa.

Day10

Fly to Cape Town

A morning drive, a road transfer to the airport and an afternoon flight to Cape Town. You arrive at Blackheath Lodge in Sea Point, the seaside suburb of Cape Town, in the early evening.

Night: Blackheath Lodge, Cape Town
Day11

A private day at Cape Point

A full day with a private guide down the peninsula: Chapman's Peak Drive, Cape Point and the penguins at Boulders Beach, with the entries covered.

Day12 to 14

Cape Town at your own pace

Table Mountain, the Winelands an hour away, the waterfront and long lunches. Southern right whales come into the bay at Hermanus from June to November. We keep these days open on purpose, and suggest rather than schedule.

Nights: Blackheath Lodge, Cape Town
Day15

Home

A transfer to Cape Town airport timed to your flight home.

Questions about Cape Town, Kruger and Victoria Falls

Can I combine Cape Town, Kruger and Victoria Falls in one trip?+
Yes, and it is one of the easiest multi-stop trips in Africa because the flights between the three are short. We do the Falls first, then the bush, and finish in Cape Town, so the trip ends on a city, a long lunch and no early starts. We plan South Africa this way, as one stop on a circuit, rather than as a trip on its own.
How many nights do you need?+
Twelve is the shortest we would plan: two near Johannesburg, three at the Falls, three in the bush and four in Cape Town. Fourteen, as shown here, gives the Falls and the Cape each a spare day. Add a day at each end for the flights.
Is it Kruger National Park, or a private reserve?+
We usually choose a private reserve beside Kruger. Kruger National Park is public and you can drive yourself between rest camps. Private reserves such as the Sabi Sand share an unfenced boundary with it, so the same animals wander through, but your lodge's ranger and tracker can leave the road, drives run after dark and few vehicles share a sighting. The lodge rate includes meals and game drives, which is why it makes up most of the price.
When is the best time for this trip?+
May to October is best for the reserves, when the bush is thin and animals gather at water. The Cape is at its warmest from November to March, so late September and early October, as priced here, is early spring there, with cooler days and whales in the bay. The Falls are strongest from February to August and lower in September and October.
Is Kruger a malaria area, and what about the Falls?+
Smartraveller lists Kruger as a malaria area. It is a medical question, so please talk to a travel doctor early about the whole route, and check smartraveller.gov.au. If malaria matters to you, tell us, because some South African reserves are described as malaria-free and we can plan around that.
How do you fly from Australia?+
Qantas flies nonstop to Johannesburg from Sydney, about four times a week and around 14 hours 50 minutes, and from Perth, three times a week and around 11 hours 15 minutes. From Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide, Singapore Airlines through Singapore is the usual one-stop route. We check days and times for your dates before anything goes in a quote.
Can we add Botswana to this trip?+
Yes. Chobe is an easy day trip from the Falls, as it is in this itinerary, and the Okavango Delta can follow the Falls by road to Kasane and a light aircraft. Our Botswana and Victoria Falls page shows how that fits together, with a price.
How do we get a quote for our dates?+
Fill in the short form on this page, call us on 1800 KINGSE (1800 546 473), or WhatsApp Samara on +61 492 037 622. We come back to you personally, usually the same day, and build the trip around your dates, with every lodge named and the price fixed in Australian dollars.
