The trip at a glance

One of the great waterfalls, then the Delta, with no one else around

Botswana and Victoria Falls sit close together and suit each other: the Falls are an easy, sociable start with plenty to choose from, and the Delta is the quiet part where the days slow right down. It is a trip people book when they have already done a Tanzania or Kenya safari and want something different.

Day by day

Eight nights, from the Falls to the Delta

Day1

Arrive at Victoria Falls

You land at Victoria Falls airport on the Zimbabwe side and your transfer is waiting. Batonka Guest Lodge is a small boutique lodge in leafy gardens, a short stroll from the town. The first evening is for a swim, a walk and a long dinner.

Night: Batonka Guest Lodge, Victoria Falls
Day2

The Falls, with a guide

A guided tour of the Falls and the rainforest walk, with the airport transfers included. The Zimbabwe side keeps the best of the view all year. In November the river is low, so you see more of the cliff and the gorge and less of the spray, which suits photographs.

Day3

A day for you

Nothing is booked, so this is the day to choose. A Zambezi sunset cruise, a helicopter flight over the Falls, a walk to the bridge, or simply the pool. The low water also opens swimming at Devil's Pool on the Zambia side, from about mid-August to early January.

Night: Batonka Guest Lodge, Victoria Falls
Day4

Chobe by day, or a slow day

The popular choice is a day trip into Botswana to Chobe National Park: a river cruise and a game drive among the largest elephant population of any country, with lunch, over the border and back by evening. Or keep it slow and save your energy for the Delta.

Day5

By road to Kasane, then into the Okavango

A road transfer to Kasane in northern Botswana, then a light aircraft to Kadizora, a remote camp in the north of the Okavango Delta. The flight is the first act of the Delta: a flat landscape of water and islands from the air. A first activity this afternoon.

Night: Kadizora Camp, Okavango Delta
Day6 to 8

Three days in the Delta

Two activities a day, chosen from game drives, mokoro trips through the channels, boat cruises and village visits. Kadizora sits alone on a floodplain in a private concession, so days move between water and land. A sunrise hot-air balloon flight over the Delta is an optional extra, and one of very few in the Delta.

Nights: Kadizora Camp, Okavango Delta

Day9

Fly out to Maun

A last morning at the camp, then a light aircraft to Maun, timed to your onward flight home through Johannesburg.

What it costs

The price in Australian dollars, from a real quote

NightsWhere you goPriced forFrom, per person
8 nightsVictoria Falls (4) and the Okavango Delta (4)Early November, the Delta camp's low seasonA$8,500

Per person, twin share. The figure is the price of a real quote we wrote and locked for two adults, rounded down to the nearest A$500. It covers the lodges, the Falls tour, road and airstrip transfers and the light-aircraft flights inside Botswana (Kasane to the camp, and the camp to Maun). Flights from Australia to Victoria Falls and home from Maun are extra. Botswana runs on low volume and high rates, so there is no real budget tier: the Delta camp is the biggest part of the price, and it costs more in the dry season, from August to October, than it does in November. We quote the exact figure for your dates, in Australian dollars.

In the price

  • Four nights at Batonka Guest Lodge with breakfast
  • A guided tour of the Falls with rainforest entry, and Victoria Falls airport transfers both ways
  • The road transfer from Victoria Falls to Kasane
  • Four nights at Kadizora Camp, with all meals, select drinks and two activities a day
  • Light aircraft from Kasane to the camp and from the camp to Maun, and the airstrip fee

Not in the price

  • Flights from Australia to Victoria Falls, and from Maun home (how people fly from Australia)
  • Travel insurance, visas and vaccinations
  • Tips, premium drinks and personal items
  • Optional extras: a Chobe day trip, a Zambezi cruise, a helicopter flight or the sunrise balloon

For a longer trip, two nights at an all-inclusive Chobe river camp came to A$2,000 to A$2,900 per person in our 2027 quotes. More detail is on our Botswana page.

When to go

The Delta and the Falls peak at different times

June to August

The Falls at their best, the Delta rising

Strong flow and good visibility at the Falls. The Delta flood peaks in July and August, which is when mokoro and boat days are at their best.

August to October

Peak season in the Delta

The dry season, with wildlife drawn to the water, and the highest camp rates of the year. Camps book out well ahead. The Falls are lower, and the Zambia side runs short of water by October.

November to April

Low season and green

The lowest camp rates, afternoon storms and green landscapes. It is what the price on this page is based on. February to April is when the Falls are at full thunder.

Good to know

Questions about Botswana and Victoria Falls

How many nights do you need for Botswana and Victoria Falls?+
Eight is the shortest trip we would plan: four at Victoria Falls and four in the Delta, which gives the Falls a rest day and the Delta enough time for water and land. Add two nights at a Chobe river camp for ten, and a day at each end for the flights.
How do you get to the Okavango Delta?+
By light aircraft. Most Delta camps are fly-in, and we book the flights as part of the trip. Botswana flights use soft bags and work to about 20kg in total including hand luggage, and unlike many bush flights that limit is enforced, so we help you pack for it.
Is it better to do the Delta or Chobe?+
They are different. The Delta is water, quiet and islands, explored by mokoro and boat as well as vehicle, in a private concession that sees few other guests. Chobe is the elephant river, with big herds in the dry season and cruises at sunset. The Falls make Chobe easy as a day trip, so many people do the Delta for the nights and Chobe for a day.
When is the best time to go?+
July to October is the Delta at its best and the most expensive. The Falls are strongest from February to August. November to April is the green season, when camp rates are lowest, which is why the price on this page is quoted for early November. Best time to visit Botswana covers the months.
Why does Botswana cost more than other safaris?+
Botswana keeps visitor numbers low on purpose, so camps are small and rates are high, and most of them can only be reached by light aircraft. The price on this page uses Kadizora, a fly-in Delta camp without marquee pricing. Marquee Delta camps cost more again. We show the real price for your dates, never a range padded to look cheaper.
Which side of Victoria Falls should we stay on, Zimbabwe or Zambia?+
We usually say Zimbabwe, because it has most of the viewing frontage, views all year and better flights. You can day-trip to the Zambia side. Our Zambia versus Zimbabwe guide goes through it, and our Victoria Falls page has the stays.
Can we bring children?+
Victoria Falls is easy with children. Kadizora does not take children under six, so a family with small children would choose a different Delta camp, and we build the trip around your family. Tell us their ages on the form.
How do we get a quote for our dates?+
