The headline parks, stepped up to characterful lodges: a coffee farm in the highlands, the well-loved Serena lodge on the crater rim and a tented camp out on the central Serengeti plains, with three full nights in the Serengeti so you're never rushing the best part.
You drive the scenic southern arc with your own guide, then skip the long haul home: a light aircraft lifts you off the plains on the last morning and has you back in Arusha in under two hours. More time with the animals, less time in the seat.

Met at Kilimanjaro and settled into Gran Meliá Arusha, a polished hotel set among coffee and tea plantations on the edge of Arusha, with Mount Meru in the window. Dinner is included tonight, then a quiet evening and a real bed before the early start.

South to Tarangire, where baobabs stand like sentinels and the dry-season elephant herds are the largest in the north. A full day on game drives, with lunch at Tarangire Safari Lodge high above the river, then up the Rift wall to a working coffee farm in the highlands below the crater.

An early start, down onto the crater floor as the gates open, while the light is soft and the predators are still working. Big Five is a real possibility before lunch. Then up to the rim for lunch at the Serena and a slow afternoon with the caldera below you. Tonight you sleep on the crater rim itself.

Across the highlands and down onto the open plains, about three and a half hours with game on the way. Lunch at camp, then your first afternoon drive in the central Serengeti.

A whole day to give the Serengeti the time it deserves. Your guide reads the plains and positions you for the action, lion on a kopje, a cheetah on the hunt, the herds moving with the season.

Another full day on the plains, with the option of a dawn hot-air balloon flight and champagne breakfast in the grass (about A$950 per person, worth every cent if the budget stretches). Afternoon drive, then a last Serengeti night.

A final morning game drive, then a light aircraft lifts you back to Arusha to connect with your flight home, or onward to Zanzibar if you've added the beach.
